Welcome
“Yet with a steady
beat,
Have not our weary feet,
Come to the place,
For which our Fathers sighed….”
The phrase “Yet with a Steady Beat” is from what
has come to be known as the Black National
Anthem – “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” This song
and phrase epitomize the struggles, hopes,
resiliency, and aspirations of peoples of
African descent in the Americas.
As we experience the early part of the 21st
Century, the “Black Church”: is still the single
most powerful institution for Blacks in America.
But there are now more competing forces and
major challenges than ever before. A new
phenomenon, megachurches, is bursting on the
scene and with the advent of cable television
and the Internet, the “electronic church” is an
issue to be dealt with. And Islam continues to
offer an attractive option to young Black males.
Nevertheless, the church continues “with a
steady beat.”
Come along as Dr. Lee June chronicles the
history of the “Black Church” in America – its
formation and development – and outlines the
impact of societal upheaval and cultural change
on the psyche of the church. Yet With a Steady
Beat is a vital resource for pastors,
congregations, educators, and all who care
deeply about the Black Church.
